Fabral Products Contribute to Largest Net Zero School in US

01/3/2012

What if a school could be designed and built to produce as much energy (on site) as it consumes from the electric grid? What if there was little or no need for electricity for use of air-conditioning, lighting or power? Limited gas bill for heating, hot water, or cooking food and no water bill for ground irrigation?

These were the questions the Irving Independent School District dared to ask when it began planning the district’s eighth middle school. What emerged was the 152,000-square-foot Lady Bird Johnson Middle School in Irving, Texas. The recently completed educational facility now holds the prestige of being the largest net zero public school in the country, the first net zero middle school in the country and the first net zero public school in Texas.

Fabral tops GA Tech Facility

Why a college football hopeful chooses one school instead of another can be based on many decisions. A stellar coach could attract a player, or the school’s reputation may entice someone. The Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, is hoping a new state-of-the-art indoor practice facility, which happens to be one of the first indoor football stadiums in the Atlantic Coast Conference, brings football stars into its program. The John & Mary Brock Football Facility opened for practice in August, and it is turning heads on campus.

Award Winning Project

10/21/2011

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) recognized its 2011 Chairman’s Award recipients at the recent METALCON International trade show. Previously named the MCA President’s Awards, the Chairman’s Awards are an annual designation given to outstanding building projects involving MCA member companies. The Awards honor innovation and creativity while showcasing how metal products help achieve exceptional building designs.

Fabral Award Winning Project:
Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts and Culture, Charlotte, NC
The architect for this project is The Freelon Group. Contractors are Batson-Cook Construction, H.J. Russell & Co., R.J. Leeper Construction, LLC. The metal installer is CR Installations, Inc.

Project Background:
The new Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts and Culture is built on a narrow plot of land in an urban renewal area in Charlotte, NC. The design reflects the center’s mission: “to present, preserve and promote African American art, culture and history for the education and enlightenment of all.”  The structure has two design elements - Jacob’s Ladder and quilting. The “fabric” of the quilt is the perforated metal panels. Hefti-Rib horizontal exposed-fastener panels from Fabral give the building depth, character and dimension.

The MCA judging panel recognized this project because of the interesting exploration that used a combination of metal techniques to create a unique visual character to the skin. The project uses a unique double screen wall to clad the building - perforated panels on top of solid panels.

Quality is Key

08/19/2011

Fabral was recently featured in the August issue of Metal Construction News, and Jim Andreas, vice president of operations for Fabral, addressed the importance of quality manufacturing and what that means to our customers.

The article begins by stating that the metal roofing and wall system business of manufacturing is more than rollforming panels. There has to be quality in every aspect of the corporation, from the front office to the production lines. There must be a commitment to the business philosophy that is intermingled in operations planning. Expertise is a requirement-in design, engineering, fabrication, customer service, sales and marketing. And without innovation, a manufacturer isn’t advancing to the next level.

Fabral tops off another signature project

07/11/2011

Before this home turned into a showcase of sustainable design as part of the International Builders Show 2011, the design team had its own vision. The vision started with the basics. Builders Jon Pleveich and Kim Foy, of Southern Traditions Development Inc., Orlando, Fla., and architect Ed Binkley, AIA, of ed binkley design llc, Oviedo, Fla., had a narrow lot-160 by 50 feet-and the desire to create something sustainable and not typically seen in the Orlando area.

“I call it the ‘urban farmhouse,’” Binkley explains. “It is a twist on traditional Victorian style that you see a lot in Florida. You take a pretty standard model and open up the inside of the house so it is more like a loft home with less traditional rooms.”

Louisiana Residence integrates metal roofing with solar

03/15/2011

By: Heidi Moore, Metalmag
Homeowner Karen Stubbs was not unfamiliar with home design challenges. She and her family had lived in several historic antebellum homes in Louisiana, which originally were constructed without indoor bathrooms and closets, let alone modern air conditioning or heating systems. Retrofitting those unique and historic living spaces for the needs of a family in the 21st century required creativity, patience and a good contractor. A design major in college with a background in architecture, Stubbs was closely involved with each project and oversaw many details.

From start to finish, Stubbs placed a high importance on longevity and sustainability. “Today there is a lot of waste that goes on in housing,” she says. “You have to constantly be replenishing and repairing.” With that in mind, Stubbs wanted to build a lasting structure that would minimize waste and conserve energy.

This is where the metal roof and solar come in…

Residential Re-Roofing in FL

06/29/2010

Florida contractors usually pay attention to the heat and are aware that more storms hit Florida than any other state. Others may be aware the state has 663 miles of beaches, 2,276 miles of coastline.

Why do contractors care about these statistics? Because their jobs — building and renovating the homes of the millions of residents — are subject to salt-water corrosion, ultraviolet damage, wind uplift, hail damage and whatever else Mother Nature dishes out.

Bonnie Pierce, director of publications for the Florida Roofing, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors Association, said Florida is set apart from other states by: “The continual and intense heat and humidity. And wind-related concerns, not just from hurricanes and tornadoes but also from the violent weather episodes we can, at certain times of the year, experience daily. As you probably know, we have our own set of building codes and a product approval system because of these factors.”

According to Neal Strickland, of Strickland Roofing, San Mateo, Fla., these issues are part of the reason why metal roofing has taken more market share in Florida. “In the areas we work we have to meet 120-mph wind resistance, and metal roofing can do that,” he says.
