Metal Encloses Any Exterior

Kit Emert

Today’s architectural exterior enclosure market includes a seemingly infinite array of high-quality options.  Brick, stone, synthetic stone, EIFS, precast concrete, HPL, glass, metal, as well as other products provide many options for the design community to wrap their hearts and minds around.  The decisions for aesthetics, longevity, sustainability, economics and branding are near endless.  However, few materials maintain the flexibility of design and application necessary to bridge building types ranging from government to education to industrial to stadiums/arenas to corporate identity to parking structures.  Metal can cover that bridge.

Architectural metal exterior enclosure systems can provide an ideal architectural and functional fit for your next building project.  Metal provides for aesthetics, functionality and productivity necessary for industrial facilities and parking structures; metal can deliver the elegance in design common to government and education buildings; metal can create the most complex of exterior enclosure systems associated with stadiums, arenas, office buildings and corporate identity applications.  With an eye toward the future, architectural metal enclosure systems can insure the sustainability, long-term durability and aesthetics critical to today’s construction demands and tomorrow’s built environment.

As you embark on your next building project design, think about Fabral.  Our sales, customer care and engineering teams assure that your building design and critical design elements are realized through quality metal wall panel and roofing systems by Fabral.

Conveying Corporate Identity with Metal

Kit Emert

Just as with logos, taglines, and mission statements, a building’s exterior can speak volumes about a company’s goals, values and culture. Think about the difference between the solid, reliable appearance conveyed by an established law firm, complete with leather-bound volumes that have long been replaced by digital databases, versus the relaxed environment of ping-pong tables, bright colors and open spaces one might associate with high tech start-ups.

Remarkably, metal can play a role in both environments.  This interactive infographic dates steel production to 1800 BC, making it a relative newcomer compared to copper crafting, which dates back to 7500 BC, the beginning of the Neolithic Age.

And yet here we are, still relying on these metals to create strong buildings and express brand identity for the environment in which many of us spend most of our waking hours:  the office. Whether inside or out, metal can be colorized, finished, embossed, rollformed, curved, perforated, welded, soldered, fastened and bent, offering more versatility and strength than virtually any other building material on the market.

Sometimes old conveys new. In the Pittsburgh, PA Strip District, innovative urban planning is creating new live / work / play environments complete with office spaces that flex to meet the demands of today’s workers. The building’s owners chose two distinct Fabral metal panel profile systems to combine a sense of history with modern uses and LEED goals.

Architects embarking on a metal project should know that they are not going at it alone. Whether provided full building schematics or a back-of-the-napkin sketch, Fabral engineers make sure our metal wall panel and roofing systems succeed for you. Check our technical center, chat with our engineers, and read this month’s case study.  We’re here to help make established materials work for you in new, sustainable and resilient ways.

Gauging the Future: Spotlight on Ongoing Value

Kit Emert

Business relationships can be easy when times are good.  But can they last when things get tough?

Lasting business relationships are just like any other relationship: they require some effort to maintain, must be mutually beneficial, and should have an element of fun.  How do relationships survive challenging times and tight deadlines?

Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, is one of the fastest growing college campuses in the United States. Classic and timeless metal roofing systems are a prominent architectural feature that unifies the campus. Since 2010, Fabral and N.B. Handy have partnered together to provide architectural metal enclosure systems to 13 campus buildings. Here are three things we at Fabral have learned along the way.

Partnership is mutual

Shared working processes deliver project quality. As with any job, Fabral engineers have performed wind calculations, reviewed and assisted with architectural specifications and confirmed shop drawings for each Liberty project, assuring that all parties will achieve the desired result. Fabral weathertight warranties also confirm that the roof systems will perform as intended.

Meet design and budget challenges

Williams Stadium, renovated in 2010, was designed with a top ridge that is physically longer than the eave. While this job might typically call for tapered panels, the Stand N’ Seam® roofing system afforded enough flexibility that it could be slightly adjusted across the roof during installation, eliminating the expense and time associated with custom panels.  In contrast, Fabral delivered the custom PowerSeam panels demanded for the tight radius on the new School of Music.

Lasting relationships demand ongoing value

Transitioning from a simple vendor/supplier relationship to a trusted business advisor is a journey. Businesses must provide ongoing value to transition a one-time project into a long term partnership. What constitutes ongoing value may vary from one relationship to the next: At Fabral, we aim to combine tested, proven product with industry-leading sales, customer service and engineering expertise.  This philosophy has earned us a trusted position at Liberty University: Fabral architectural enclosure systems now form the basis of design for this growing community in the heart of Virginia.

Gauging the Future: Spotlight on Parking Garages

Kit Emert

It’s been said that ‘the whole auto industry will change more in the next 10 years than it has in the last 100 years.’* Clearly, the advent of services such as Uber and Lyft is changing transportation dynamics for drivers and passengers. The introduction and adoption of driverless cars holds even more disruptive societal potential.

Across the country and around the world, cities are determining how to regulate ride-hailing services in ways that support business and protect citizens. Consumers, watchdog groups, and government are preparing for the revolution.  Given technological, safety, and societal concerns, no one can be certain when driverless cars will begin to appear on our highways and streets – estimates range from a few years to several decades – but there are some things we do know:

Transportation infrastructure is big business in both the public and commercial sectors. Driverless cars offer significant safety and mobility potential, as well as increased productivity. Consumers will continue to seek fast, safe and green ways to reach their destination. Given the significant economic implications to vehicle manufacturing, automobile insurance, repair services, driver and valet services, transitioning from today’s environment into that new future will be economically and socially challenging.

Based on what we know now, it seems certain we’ll continue to need to park and protect our automobiles, both driverless and traditional.  Metal plays an important role in that service.

As illustrated in this month’s case study about the College Football Hall of Fame, Fabral metal panels can secure, beautify and improve the functionality and comfort of parking facilities.  Tested, long-lasting metals panels can be fabricated, shaped and colored according to your design demands to create welcoming parking structures that users embrace. And, years from now, if parking structures become as defunct as the Model T, Fabral metal panels can be fully recycled into their new form, ready to sustainably address what society needs then.

Rethinking Outdoor Design

Kit Emert

This time of year, it’s easy to understand why people want to be outside.

Wherever the weather permits, people are headed outdoors for al fresco experiences. Homeowners and landscaping companies are tilling the ground for summer planting. Hospitality businesses are dusting off patios and updating spring menus. For many, it’s the best time of the year.

This spring is also witnessing strengthening construction growth as predicted by Dodge Data & Analytics 2016 Construction Outlook report. Interest rates remain favorable and they are supportive of economic growth.

Given an uncertain future, ever-changing technology and work force patterns, new construction has high demands for sustainable, affordable and healthy products that quickly recover their cost. Architects seek and demand products with recognizable engineering specifications and demonstrated, sustainable performance.  These products must adapt to meet changing lifestyles and deliver flexibility both now and in the future.

As noted in Architect Magazine, today’s lifestyles are increasingly casual. Open-space layouts and airy rooms that blend the line between indoors and out are increasingly popular in both commercial and residential spaces. Rooms must serve multiple purposes.

Equinox Louvered Roofs, offered by Euramax International, offer the same functionality, quality and engineering expertise architects have come to expect from Fabral.  With a touch of a button, aluminum louvers open and close to manage the covered environment, filter sun, and shut out rain – providing the ultimate adaptability and performance expected by hospitality businesses and discriminating homeowners. Equinox is suited for patios, decks, entryways, courtyards, pools, outdoor kitchens – any place where convenient sun, light and weather control is desired. An Equinox Louvered Roof system can be installed flat, gabled, pitched, or as vertical screening, wrapped in finishes to your specifications.

These flexible spaces can be constructed at a fraction of the price of traditional interior spaces, generating quick payback while offering long term enjoyment.

Regular readers of this column know my passion for metal. This season, seek out an Equinox Louvered Roof to deliver beautiful design, unmatched quality and remarkable functionality for your next construction project. Visit www.equinoxlouveredroof.com to learn more.

The Expressive Power of Metal

Kit Emert

A myriad of exterior building materials are available in today’s market environment.  These materials can be used alone for a monolithic appearance or blended together to create visual interest and shadow effects.  Regardless of the materials ultimately selected for your next project, sustainable metals should be part of the discussion.

Metal provides an ideal architectural and functional fit for many types of building projects and creates an expression that cannot be achieved with other building materials.  Metal exterior cladding profiles and systems can be blended together to create light and dark shadow impacts. Cladding can be used horizontally or vertically to create built-in stops to sight lines or to change the shadow orientation.  Whether steel, aluminum, copper or zinc, metal can be easily integrated with other types of building materials or integrated with aluminum curtainwall system components to create interesting appearance dynamics. (See this month’s project at West Georgia Technical College for a great case in point.)

It’s often said that no two fingerprints are alike, an expression that can also be applied to buildings.  Even when completing similar projects on different sites, variations in the site layouts will mandate some visual changes.  Metal can accommodate these differences and deliver complex detailing and design elements, allowing architects to reach their design goals, convey brand elements and help build community.

For over 45 years, Fabral has successfully delivered exterior metal wall and roof systems for thousands of building projects around the world, and design dynamics have been different for each of these projects.   As with metal, Fabral is sustainable and flexible. Let us help you craft your visual and brand goals on your next building.

Big Data Brings Big Changes

Kit Emert

Ever heard the term ‘big data’ and thought about how it influences architects? The tie-in may not be obvious, but designing with metal and data growth are associated.

The amount of data that’s being created and stored every day on a global level is almost inconceivable.*

Fueled by the internet, inexpensive connected mobile devices and more, data is multiplying.  Businesses and nonprofits are increasingly challenged with storing, analyzing and using data to make better decisions that can reduce cost and risk while improving operational outcomes.

With the average U.S. data center approaching 20 years of age, many businesses simply don’t want to deal with outdated facilities and building systems infrastructure. As data increases, the demand for facilities that can store and manage it also increases.

Technological trends such as this one change the architectural and building landscape.

In September 2015, Architect featured five new building types that require new design expertise, including resilient, bioclimatic and net zero buildings, and — you guessed it — data centers. Metal can play a sustaining role in all these environments.

Innovative architecture doesn’t have to shun tradition; proven systems and materials can be used in new ways. This month’s Fabral product focus highlights how Fabral metal wall panel systems were used to clad the exterior of a new data center demonstrating again metal’s ability to express color, texture and brand in a cost-effective way constrained only by the designer’s imagination.

Fabral Delivers Win for Virginia Tech

Kit Emert

An enjoyable aspect of being in the construction industry is seeing your projects come to life. It’s a real pleasure to admire and appreciate the buildings around us, to note what they stand for, what their purpose is and recognize their significant architectural elements. At Fabral, we take pride in a job well done, knowing that a building roof or wall panel system will stand strong and deliver beauty and performance for years to come.

In today’s technology-driven culture, it’s easy for people to become caught up in electronics, mesmerized by videos, preoccupied by streaming music and social media.  We all appreciate the connection, knowledge and entertainment our devices bring.  The reality is, however, that we need strong, reliable buildings and structures to appreciate this new virtual reality. Tweeting with friends and colleagues becomes much less amusing when standing outside in inclement weather. No one wants to post about a roof failure or cold apartment or unattractive patio on their Facebook timeline.

Fabral and Euramax are in the business of creating beautiful, functional, and high-performance exterior building systems. The new Virginia Tech indoor practice facility is one such environment.  On September 7, 2015, years of dreaming and planning, budgeting and construction came to fruition with the opening of this world class sports facility.

Fabral was proud to be a part of this effort.  I’m reminded that in spite of modern technology, old-fashioned experience, grit and determination still count — such as when an experienced roll form operator travels from Georgia to Virginia to be lifted, along with his equipment, up to the roof eave to fabricate panels.  I’m impressed when business partners come together in a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation to deliver a structure that provides young athletes an opportunity to compete and excel.

This spirit of can-do, no shortcuts, and high expectations is the spirit of Fabral. Metal offers more design flexibility and performance than any other building material available today — and Fabral offers everything you need to succeed in your next project.

Sustainable Building with Metal Panels
Kit’s Take on Greenbuild

Kit Emert I’ve just returned from the 2015 Greenbuild expo held Wednesday and Thursday, November 18-19, in Washington DC. Greenbuild brings together a myriad of exterior and interior building products manufacturers, the design community and the contracting community in a manner that no other North American tradeshow event does. Greenbuild focuses on the future — how people will live, work and play in an enduring and sustainable environment. Regardless of your beliefs about climate change, we can all agree that being good stewards of our resources, protecting our natural and built environment, and working toward a better future are necessary and worthy pursuits.

Metal fits beautifully into the green and sustainable environment. Metal exterior and interior building products and systems are largely made of recycled content and are wholly recyclable. They can be used in their natural state or appearance, or they can be architecturally finished with reflective and energy saving coatings. They can easily incorporate energy management and energy consumption reduction components such as phase change materials and insulation. Frequently, they can be produced in close proximity to the building site or on the building site, which reduces transportation energy, packaging materials and waste disposal. Metal can be bent, formed, fabricated, rollformed, punched, sheared, welded, soldered, painted, anodized, finished, fastened, twisted, curved, stretch-formed, embossed, routed, spun, extruded, cast, integrated with other building materials and installed in a manner that no other building material can achieve, allowing the design influencer and the owner to deliver the appearance and the architectural elements needed for their building project and their brand.

Whether you need metal, windows and doors, outdoor patio systems or luxurious copper accents, call on Euramax to guarantee the future of your building project. We look forward to equipping you through sustainable Euramax building products and systems.
